Tiger Woods (64-66) bogeyed No. 11 for the second day in a row but bounced back with three birdies in four holes (Nos. 13, 15 and 16) and leads at 10-under 130 by one stroke over Rod Pampling.

Woods' 10-under 130 marks just the second time in history that a double-digit score under-par after 36 holes is posted during a tournament at Congressional CC. Danny Edwards was 10-under after 36-holes (67-67) in the 1981 Kemper Open and eventually finished T6 with 73-72 on the weekend.
Woods' 130 is the lowest first 36-hole total posted at any of the 14 events (1964 and 1997 U.S. Open, 1976 PGA Championship, 1980-86 Kemper Open, 2005 Booz Allen, 2007-09 AT&T National) held at Congressional CC.
Woods' 130 total is a tournament record for the first 36-holes at the AT&T National. Last year, both Tom Pernice Jr. and Jeff Overton posted 131 through 36-holes.
This marks the 38th time that Woods has held the 36-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA TOUR. He has gone on to win 31 of the 37 previous times. The last time Woods led after 36 holes was at the 2008 Buick Invitational, which he won.
Woods has now made 38 consecutive cuts and leads that category on the PGA TOUR. Charley Hoffman (71-69) and Hunter Mahan (69-69) also advanced to the weekend and are second and third respectively on the list with 25 and 22 consecutive cuts made.
Woods, at No. 4, is the highest-ranked player in the FedExCup standings teeing it up this week. With a victory here he would become the first player to top 2,000 points this season. Woods, Sean O'Hair (69-72) and Lucas Glover (69-66) are the only three players who have a chance to oust Kenny Perry from the No. 1 spot this week, but all three require a victory to make that happen.
Rod Pampling (67-64) posted his lowest round of the year. It was a stroke shy of his career-best 63 (2 times, most recent 2008 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial).
Pampling hit 9 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in both the first and second round and has avoided a three-putt.
Pampling has a good track record in the AT&T National at Congressional CC:
|
Pampling has been consistent during his seven years on the PGA TOUR. The Australian has four top-25 finishes this year and has never had a season with less than nine top-25s. Currently 91st on the money-list, he has finished higher than No. 90 every year, including a career-best 17th in 2006 when he scored his second win on TOUR at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Woods and Pampling will play together in Saturday's third round. The last time they were paired together was in the third round of the 2007 World Golf Championships-CA Championship at Doral Golf Resort. Woods shot 68 that day while Pampling posted 74. Woods went on to win the tournament.
Pampling owns 30 top-10 finishes in his career but just one this season (T9/WGC-CA Championship). He has two victories in his native Australia (1999 Canon Challenge, 2008 Australian Masters) to match his two PGA TOUR wins (2004 The INTERNATIONAL, 2006 Bay Hill Invitational).
Anthony Kim's successful stretch of birdies at the 402-yard, par-4 first hole at Congressional CC came to an end on Friday when he posted a par. Kim made four birdies on No. 1 in the 2008 AT&T National and another in Thursday's first round.
Kim joined Woods in the lead at 10-under at 2:47 p.m. when he birdied No. 8 but followed with a bogey at No. 9 and never regained the lead/co-lead.
Since joining the TOUR in 1994, Jim Furyk (66-67) has recorded at least one victory every year with the exception of 1994, '97, '04, and '08. He has yet to record a win this season and has quietly worked his way into fourth place through 36-holes. Furyk has six top-10s this year and has a liking for Congressional CC, having finished T3 in both the 2007 and '08 editions of the AT&T National. He also posted a T5 finish at Congressional in the 1997 U.S. Open.
Bryce Molder (64-70) got to 8 under before three bogeys in four holes (Nos. 4, 6 and 7) halted his progress, eventually finishing 6 under through 36-holes.
Molder, Pampling, D.A. Points and Danny Lee are among several non-exempt players vying for a spot in the 2009 British Open Championship by finishing as the leading player, not otherwise exempt, who finish among the top-5 this week. Two players will also qualify for the Open via a special mini money-list (see below).
The AT&T National is the sixth event in a six-tournament series (PLAYERS, Memorial, St. Jude, U.S. Open, Travelers, AT&T National), where the top two money-winners, not previously exempt, earn British Open exemptions. Here's a look at the list of non-exempt players, their current position on the list and the money they have earned in five of the six events:

Ryan Moore (69-66) was one of just three players (Anthony Kim, Steve Elkington) to post bogey-free rounds in Thursday's first round. His second-round 66 included two bogeys (Nos. 2 and 18). Moore moved to 5-under and jumped from T20 to T8. Also at 5-under is Lucas Glover (69-66), who posted four consecutive birdies (Nos. 15-18) to make the turn in 5-under 30 in round two.
Not a single player is bogey-free through 36-holes.
Danny Lee (68-67) is playing his seventh TOUR event as a professional and has earnings of $169,304. The New Zealand rookie needs to earn the equivalent of $537,958 (150th on 2008 money-list) to earn temporary membership and receive unlimited invitations. Lee, in T8 position through 36-holes, has confirmed starts at the Buick Open, the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and a possible start at the Wyndham Championship where he finished T20 last year as an amateur.
Robert Garrigus (70-68) recorded the only eagle of the day after hitting a 263-yard shot to within 2 feet of the hole at the 579-yard, par-5 16th hole.
It was 26 years ago that U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples (72-67) won his first PGA TOUR title at the Kemper Open held at Congressional. He's not at the A&T National this week, but Couples' opposing captain for the upcoming Presidents Cup matches, Greg Norman, also won the Kemper Open when it was played at Congressional.
Paul Casey (75-69), No. 3 on the Official World Golf Ranking, scored five birdies in six holes (Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9) to get back to even-par for the tournament. Four bogeys over the next six holes (Nos. 10, 12, 13 and 15) halted his progress and he failed to make the cut. He also missed the cut at his previous tournament, the U.S. Open.

The cut came at 2-over 142 with 76 players advancing to the weekend. The cut was 4-over 144 in 2007 and 3-over 143 in 2008.
Jeff Overton withdrew during the second round with a wrist injury.
